Impact Teachers: Not just a recruitment agency

One of the daily questions I get as a consultant at Impact is ‘what makes you stand out from the rest?’ Of course I speak about our bonuses and our unique care service and all things related to pay.

What is left to the wayside is the biggest part of what makes Impact who we are and what we stand for; our programmes initiative.

For over ten years now, Impact has worked on a global front giving back to education elsewhere. We currently support schools across Africa and have been first-hand part of teacher development through our unique and impacting volunteer teacher training trips to India and Africa.

Since working at Impact Teachers, I have had the privilege of being part of two of our trips to New Delhi, India.  I am proud to be part of such of initiative, knowing  what we do can help to better teaching practice both for ourselves and the teachers we support. We now look forward with great anticipation to our exciting new chapter  kick-starting in Kenya next year.

People often think about working with children when they hear about volunteer teaching programmes across the world. They would be half right, but what must be said is that we are fundamentally supporting fellow teachers.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.

It is easy to take for granted the luxuries we have, and sometimes that can be as simple as unrestricted access to education and resources. An ongoing fight in the western world of teaching is that teachers are overworked and underpaid. Let’s look back to India, these teachers get minimal training, earn on average Rs 299,862 (Indian Rupees) per year (equivalent to just over £3000), teach around 40 children at once in a small classroom, and have access to simply a blackboard (not whiteboard) and a limited number of textbooks (available only to share). We are lucky.

Yet, these teachers in India, despite the limitations they are under, know no bounds. They are passionate about their students and will do everything they can to inspire and encourage. Impact simply wants to help them with the tools to do so.

Our next venture begins in February next year as we embark on our first official trip to Kenya. We have already put plans in place to begin a new curriculum and build our first team of volunteers.  There is a trepidation as we step in to the unknown, but overall excitement as we learn more and more about the schools and the community we will be working in.
